Volkswagen Golf Guide

When it was first launched in the 1970's, the Golf, in particular the GTI, was the original head of the pack in the competitive hot hatch market.

The latest model, with its muscular turbocharged petrol engine will ensure that the competition is still scrambling to keep up.

However, the Golf is not simply a hot hatch; it has always been first and foremost a driverís car. Yes, the latest GTi does come with a 197bhp turbocharged petrol engine and aggressive styling. But it also offers a great ride and superlative handling.

Practicality

The VW Golf, even the top-end GTI offers excellent value for money. It may be more expensive than some other cars in its class, but when you look at the overall package you get so much more for your money.

The build quality is legendary and this, combined with a reputation for quality and performance, ensures that the Golf holds it resale value better than many marques.

In terms of space and comfort the Golf is more than capable of carrying a small family. It also has enough head and leg room to accommodate even the tallest occupants.

There is more than enough storage space in the Golf's glove box and door pockets to contain all of the drinks, maps, mobile phones and MP3 players that anyone could wish for.

The Golf's spacious layout, and the fact that doors open widely, mean that getting in and out of the car is no problem, regardless of your height.

Parking the VW Golf is a simple affair. The seating position is quite high, giving good visibility, and the steering is very responsive; especially at lower speeds making it a dream to manoeuvre.

If you select the rear parking sensor option reversing is also a piece of cake.

The Golf boasts a very respectable boot space. This is enhanced by the fact that the car's rear seat splits and folds back to create additional storage space.

Interior

The Golf audio system is impressive; a ten-speaker radio-CD. It can be upgraded to an armrest-located CD changer for very little extra.

If you travel more extensively, the full colour satellite navigation system is second to none.

A large range of exterior and interior colours and trim are available.

The latest models also have a remodelled instrument console with beautiful aluminium-trimmed black dials with white, backlit lettering.

Economy

Improvements to the engine design have resulted in lower fuel consumption and emissions. The 2 litre diesel returns 58mpg; not bad for a car with this kind of performance.

CO2 emissions are generously cut from 159g/km to 129g/km.

Performance & Handling

Fortunately, no performance has been sacrificed to achieve this economy. The 2 litre Diesel has masses of torque and is smooth throughout its rev range.

The Golf's front seats are heavily padded to provide extra support when cornering, which improves handling without sacrificing comfort.

Unlike many smaller cars the Golf's handling is not compromised, even when approaching its top speed.

The Golf handles even the bumpiest roads with ease. Like all good sports cars it does deliver a firm ride but this only serves to enhance the drivers experience as it improves feedback.

The Adaptive Chassis Control option completes the package and automatically adjusts suspension damping, helping to smooth out the ride.

Safety & security

The Golf comes equipped as standard with a wide range of security features:

  • Remote central locking
  • A security coded stereo
  • An engine immobiliser
  • A security alarm
  • If alloy wheels are fitted they come with locking nuts

The Golf is not short on safety features either. Twin front, side and curtain airbags are fitted as standard, for those of you with children Isofix mountings are provided for the rear seats.

ABS and ESP are, as you might expect also offered as standard fittings.

For the gadget freaks amongst you the computer controlled suspension and cruise control that checks the road for slower traffic and maintains a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front are must-haves.

It's good to find extra safety equipment aboard the new Golf, including knee airbags for the driver. There is also a new head-restraint system designed to reduce whiplash injuries, and further reassurance comes with the latest electronic stability program driver aid.
